After Dental Implants

Do not disturb the wound. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound on the day of surgery. Avoid eating directly over the implant site.

Bleeding

A small amount of blood may be expected during the first 24 – 48 hours. Do not spit as this will increase bleeding. If there is blood in your mouth, you can wipe it with a tissue or gauze. Bleeding can be controlled by biting on a gauze pad placed directly on the wound for 20 minutes. If bleeding is excessive or continues, please call for further instructions.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal occurrence after surgery. To minimize swelling, apply ice over the surgical site for the first 48 hours. Ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil can be taken as well to control inflammation.

Diet

Drink plenty of fluids. Do not use a straw as this will increase bleeding. Avoid small particle foods if instructed (for example, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, broccoli). Return to a normal diet as soon as possible unless otherwise directed.

Pain

Immediately following the procedure: begin taking medication as directed by your doctor to minimize discomfort when the anesthesia wears off and feeling in your lip, tongue, and chin are back to normal. Application of an ice bag the first 2 days can also help relieve discomfort. Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Advil (Ibuprofen) can be taken at first or at the same time as your pain medication.  After 2 days a warm compress can be used if needed for swelling.

Some discomfort is normal after surgery. If by the fourth or fifth day the pain has not subsided and cannot be controlled by pain medication, please contact our office and report these symptoms so that you can receive additional instructions and clinical advice.

Antibiotics/Medications If you were prescribed antibiotics or any other medications, please use as directed.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is essential to good healing. Start brushing and flossing the morning after your procedure. Be gentle cleaning around the surgical area. It is important to rinse after eating.

Activity

Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery. It is recommend that you rest the first 24 hours. If you are considering exercise, throbbing or bleeding may occur. If this occurs, you should discontinue exercising. Keep in mind that you are probably not taking normal nourishment. This may weaken you and further limit your ability to exercise.
